The topic of the Western Balkans was touched upon at a meeting in Salzburg between Bulgaria's President Rumen Radev and his Austrian counterpart Alexander Van der Bellen. "Bulgaria is the strongest supporter of EU enlargement, but it cannot allow the violation of the rights of the citizens of North Macedonia with Bulgarian self-consciousness," Radev stressed.
The Bulgarian President pointed out that Austria is a leading trading partner and investor in Bulgaria. In 2020, trade between the two countries amounted to 1.358 billion euros, and Austrian investments in Bulgaria amounted to 319.2 million euros.
On achieving a climate-neutral EU, the two agreed that limiting greenhouse gas emissions would be good for the environment and human health. "However, the transition must be fair for all member states and not cause energy or economic collapse in less developed countries," Radev said.
