Young Roma with an education seek employment abroad

Photo: BGNES

The Roma community are finding it difficult to adapt to the labour market in Bulgaria, said Gancho Iliev, chair of the “World without Borders” association for the BNR’s Radio Stara Zagora. Many of the Roma tend to look for an income on a daily basis, not as a career prospect, Iliev said. In his words this is due to the low level of education within this community.

“Education and qualification are the biggest obstacles to the Roma’s employability in this country,” Gancho Iliev explained and added that after graduating, most of the young people from the Roma community seek employment abroad. This is due to the fact there are no state policies to keep them in the country.
