A 35-year-old woman was attacked by a bear near the Dancing Bears Park in Belitsa in Bulgaria's Rila Mountains (about 180 km south of Sofia). The victim is in hospital with severe lacerations, but in stable condition.

At the time of the incident there are several families picking mushrooms close to the Dancing Bears Park. During the attack, the victim's children and husband shouted, and the frightened bear fled.

The mayor of Belitsa municipality, Radoslav Revanski, told BNR that forest officials are looking to collect the remaining people picking mushrooms that are in the area of the incident.

We are waiting for an order from the Ministries of Environment and Agriculture to shoot the aggressive bear before another incident occurs, the mayor said.

Surveillance cameras near the dancing bears park show that the animal has already attacked bee hives, but this is the first incident with a human.
