One of the leaders of the democratic changes in Bulgaria passes away

Evgeni Bakardzhiev has passed away aged 66. He was born on February 19, 1955 in Bulgaria’s capital Sofia. Evgeni Bakardzhiev graduated from the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy. Bakardzhiev was also Chairman of the Sofia Municipal Council. In 1995, he headed the Sofia branch of the Union of Democratic Forces (SDS). 

He led the election campaign of Stefan Sofiyanski at the mayoral elections in 1995 and the election campaign of Petar Stoyanov at the Presidential elections in 1996. Evgeni Bakardzhiev served as Deputy-Premier and Minister of Regional Development in Ivan Kostov’s cabinet. Evgeni Bakardzhiev led the negotiations with Gazprom for the supply and transit of natural gas. As a Minister of Regional Development, Bakardzhiev had a leading role in the demolition of Georgi Dimitrov’s mausoleum located downtown Sofia.
