Bulgaria and Romania with highest number of road accident fatalities in EU: Eurostat

According to Eurostat data published today the number of road accident fatalities in the EU has gone down by 2.5% in 2019 compared to the previous year.

Out of the total number of fatalities (22 800 persons were killed in road accidents in the EU in all) around 44% of the fatalities were passenger car drivers or passengers, 20 were pedestrians, 16% were motorcyclists, 9% were cyclists and 11% - other categories. Compared to 2009 the number of road accident fatalities has gone down by 31% or 10,000 people.

Road accident fatalities per 1 million inhabitants are lowest in Sweden – 22, and highest in Romania - 96 and Bulgaria – 90.
