The Public Council of the Bulgarian National Radio has called for a moratorium on the reduction of funding for the public-service media.

"We demand that BNR's budget subsidy be restored to its original amount," the council members wrote in a letter to the Bulgarian president, the National Assembly, the Council of Ministers and the Council for Electronic Media.

In the last two months, with a decision of the outgoing cabinet, the budget subsidy for the Bulgarian National Radio has been reduced twice by a total of nearly BGN 1 million.

The director general of the BNR, Andon Baltakov, called for restoring the cut funding, stressing that unless this is done, the BNR will need to reduce operating costs.
"The normal implementation of the national radio's public service mission has been placed under threat," he added.
