Businesses in Bulgaria at risk of being taken over

Bulgaria ranks first in terms of business risk among four surveyed countries (Bulgaria, Spain, Italy and Romania) during an international pilot project, Todor Galev of the Center for the Study of Democracy has told BNR. The sectors of construction, trading in fuels and pharmaceuticals, as well as regulatory and control institutions have been monitored over a ten-year period. "There is an unhealthy environment with no guarantees for normal business relations," the expert commented. He expressed surprise that the parliamentary committee reviewing the work of the previous government received evidence of political racketeering against businessman Svetoslav Ilchovski committed by people close to the government, not because such cases were rare, but because of overall disbelief in the possibility of finding justice. However, Todor Galev does not expect the Prosecutor's Office to become more active, because it was part of the problem with the conquest of law enforcement institutions.
