The 145th anniversary of the outbreak of the April Uprising is being marked with various events throughout the country. The uprising started prematurely on April 20, 1876 in the town of Koprivshtitsa. 145 years later, Bulgarians present wreaths of gratitude in the historic square in the old town.
The uprising was organized by the Revolutionary Committee in Giurgiu. Although brutally suppressed by the Ottoman authorities, the action was a political success, making the Bulgarian question part of the agenda of European diplomacy at the time. The reactions led to the convening of an ambassadorial conference in Constantinople. After its failure, the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78 started, leading to the Liberation of Bulgaria.
