Covid-19 in Bulgaria: Day 399

Brazilian and South African variants of coronavirus have not been detected in Bulgaria
In the first week of April, the British variant of the coronavirus was identified in almost all of the 365 samples submitted to the National Centre for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, Maria Nikolova from the institution clarified to Nova TV.
Neither the Brazilian nor the South African variants of the virus have been found in Bulgaria so far, Nikolova specified.
She added that in the notorious Romanian mutation, the virus binds more strongly to the cells and this somewhat interferes with the antibodies we have formed against the old variant.
As for the protective role of vaccines against more aggressive strains, their action would protect people from a more severe course of the disease, Maria Nikolova explained.

Bulgaria reports 16.5 percent of positive Covid-19 tests in past 24 hours
For the past 24 hours, Bulgaria has registered a total of 2,803 new cases of Covid-19 with 16,965 tests performed. Of these, 54 cases are among medical staff.
The highest number of new infections is recorded in Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora and Burgas.
10,271 patients are currently treated in hospitals and 812 are in intensive care units.  A total of 2,890 people have been cured in the past day. 138 people have died.
During the past 24 hours, 14,874 doses of vaccine have been administered. Thus, the total number of vaccinated persons has reached 567,396.  112,685 people have received both doses.

In children, Covid-19 continues to have milder symptoms
The symptoms of coronavirus infection in children are much milder. This was clarified to BNT by Prof. Svetlana Velizarova, head of the children's clinic at the Lung Hospital in Sofia. According to her, the virus has started to "rejuvenate" because of the available testing kits, with which parents immediately examine their children when the virus is suspected.
There is not a single child in the Covid-19 ward, but nevertheless the risk remains mostly for children with chronic diseases and overweight, Prof. Velizarova warned.
The main problems that the virus hides for children are the educational, social and communication gaps accumulated during the pandemic. They will appear in about 10 years, the pediatrician believes.

Vaccinated persons should still follow restrictive measures
People with antibodies, when in contact with virus carriers, can become involuntary spreaders of the infection. The purpose of the vaccination and the formation of antibodies is to protect the immunized and to limit the epidemic when the virus enters their upper respiratory tract. This was explained to bTV by Dr. Nikolay Branzalov, Deputy Chairman of the Bulgarian Medical Association (BMA).
Therefore, regardless of whether people have been vaccinated or have developed antibodies due to undergoing the disease, they must continue to follow the measures.
