Bulgaria among ten countries with highest Covid-19 mortality rate

Bulgaria is in the list of the ten countries most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in terms of the number of deaths, according to data from the monitoring of the pandemic of the Johns Hopkins Institute.

Based on the number of victims of the infection per 100 thousand people of the population, Bulgaria ranks tenth in mortality with 173.51 deaths from established coronavirus infection. Ahead of Bulgaria based on this indicator are San Marino, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Montenegro, Slovenia, Great Britain, Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Italy.

Bulgaria ranks 14th in terms of case fatality with 4% mortality among confirmed cases of Covid-19, the Ministry of Health announced.

Bulgaria is negotiating an additional 1 million vaccines

Bulgaria can receive 1 million Pfizer vaccines from the additional quantities agreed by the European Commission, Bulgaria's Health Minister Kostadin Angelov said in Yambol today.

Bulgaria is participating in the discussion on the distribution of the additional 10 million vaccines agreed by the EU, Angelov stressed. "The additional amount of vaccines that we will order from Pfizer is 1,500,000. We will try to shift the deliveries planned for the fourth quarter of the year to the second quarter," the minister added.

Regarding the production of vaccines in Bulgaria, the Minister specified that the initiative is of the EU for the establishment of a HERA incubator aс each of the Member States can apply with its own production facilities.

All hospitals in Bulgaria are supplied with oxygen

All medical institutions in this country are supplied with oxygen, Deputy Minister of Health Slavi Pachalov has told BNR. There is an increase in the use of oxygen, comparable to that during the second wave of the coronavirus epidemic in Bulgaria in the autumn, but so far there have been no signals from hospitals about lack of oxygen, Pachalov also said.

Almost 24% of 18,808 coronavirus tests performed in past 24 hours return positive

4,467 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Bulgaria in the past 24 hours out of 18,808 tests performed. The highest number of new infections was reported in Sofia-1,289, followed by Varna-281, Blagoevgrad-190 and Ruse-185, indicate data of the Single Coronavirus Information Portal. 23.75% of the tests have returned positive result. There are 58,671 active cases of Covid-19. 169 people have died in the past 24 hours.

There are 8,689 people in hospital, as 691 of them are in intensive care units. 2,260 people have recovered in the past 24 hours.

7,465 vaccines have been administered in Bulgaria in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of inoculations against Covid-19 to 376,370. 73,853 people have already received their second vaccine dose.

All prescriptions to become electronic from May 1

Electronic medical prescriptions in Bulgaria are still less preferred than paper ones. After May 1, however, all prescriptions will be issued in electronic form. This was what Dimitar Marinov, Secretary General of the Bulgarian Pharmaceutical Union has told BNR. He said that pharmacists were already prepared and that the software was also ready.

Prescriptions on paper issued by April 30th will be executed within their validity period, Marinov added.

Electronic prescriptions were introduced in Bulgaria in mid-December.

Bulgarian President has discussed upcoming elections with OSCE observers

For the first time Bulgaria faces the challenge of holding elections during an epidemic. This was what President Rumen Radev said at a meeting with representatives of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe - OSCE, who are monitoring the preparation and holding of the parliamentary elections on April 4, BTA reported.

The conditions for voting of quarantined citizens, the difficulties in processing the results of the simultaneous vote with machines and paper ballots, the prevention of a high percentage of invalid ballots and the introduction of video surveillance during the counting of ballots and the preparation of election protocols have been discussed.
