Koprivshtitsa – a town with beautiful architecture and rich history

Photo: BGNES

Koprivshtitsa is a small Bulgarian town located at the foot of Sredna Gora mountain range. Getting a first-hand experience of the cobblestone streets and the colorful Revival Period houses lends you the feeling of travelling back in time. Koprivshtitsa is among the few Bulgarian towns that have preserved their authentic architecture typical of the period before the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman rule. This is because Koprivshtitsa, unlike most cities and towns in Bulgaria, was not burnt down during the April Uprising in 1876 and the insurrection against the Ottomans.

Today, we are proud with Koprivshtitsa and its beautiful architecture. The town leads us back to the glorious time of the national struggles for liberation from the Ottoman rule. Many famous Bulgarian revolutionaries, intellectuals and public figures were born in Koprivshtitsa. Their houses were renovated and converted into museums. Every year, thousands of tourists visit these museums to pay tribute to the holy deed of the people who lived there.

The first stop of every curious visitor is the local Tourist Information Center and the nearby souvenir shop. There, tourists can buy a multi-site ticket to visit most of the town’s museums and immerse in the history of Koprivshtitsa.
