A group of six Bulgarian polar explorers is preparing to leave for the Frozen Continent (Antarctica) on January 12. The Bulgarian Antarctic base is located on Livingston Island, in the western part of the continent.
Professor Hristo Pimpirev, who has been heading Bulgaria’s Antarctic expeditions for years, will not travel to the Ice Continent this year. However, he will continue to guide his team remotely. According to the restrictions introduced on the Frozen Continent in connection with the spread of Covid-19, people aged 60 or above are not allowed to access the continent and Professor Pimpirev also belongs to this group.
Before stepping on Livingston Island, the Bulgarian polar explorers will be placed under a fourteen-day quarantine in Chile. Then, they will be able to sail to the icy continent onboard the Spanish research ship Hesperides. The Bulgarian explorers will sail to Antarctica together with the Spanish polar explorers.
