Armenians in Bulgaria celebrate Christmas

Photo: BNR - library

On January 6, Armenians celebrate Christmas and Epiphany. This year the Armenian Church in Sofia will be broadcasting the Holy Liturgy online because of the pandemic. This was what Vartanush Topakbashian, editor-in-chief of the Yerevan newspaper, has told the BNR.

On this day, the Armenian Church blesses a pomegranate - a symbol of the unity of the Armenian people scattered around the world. Anush abur (Christmas sweet soup) is served on the table. Sweetened rice, bread with a coin, baklava, the traditional keshkek, etc. are also prepared.

According to NSI data, in Bulgaria there are 6,000 to 7,000 people who self-identify as Armenian.
