The Russian embassy in Bulgaria described as unjustified the declaration as persona non grata of the head of the Russian Ministry of Defence office.

Such acts do not promote dialogue in the military sphere nor do their consolidate stability in the Black Sea region. The Russian side reserves the right to retaliate, the announcement reads.

The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry gave the Russian diplomat 72 hours to leave the country.

The United States of America supports Bulgaria’s efforts to protect its sovereignty and security, including the announcement today to expel a Russian embassy official for conducting espionage, reads the position of the US embassy in Sofia.
