All specialized institutions for people with mental disorders to be closed down by 2027

22 specialized institutions for people with mental disorders and retardation were inspected in the period from 26 October until 20 November by order of the Supreme Administrative Prosecutor’s Office.

The inspections were conducted following complaints of bad practices at three social institutions submitted in August by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.  Following the inspections a decision was taken for the stage-by-stage closure of all 28 government-financed specialized institutions for people with mental disorders and retardation by 2027.
