The monument on the shores of Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia, was unveiled in memory of 15 Bulgarian tourists who lost their lives on September 5, 2009 in the sinking of the Ilinden ship, BGNES reported. A "stylized drop" with intertwined 15 metal roses in memory of the tragic incident has been destroyed.

Bulgaria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its indignation at the desecration of the monument. "Such an attitude towards the memory of the dead Bulgarian tourists is intolerable," the Foreign Ministry said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia has also strongly condemned the act of vandalism.
