On November 23, on the feast day of St. Prince Alexander Nevsky, the Sofia-based patriarchal cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky marks its patron day. The saint was the heavenly patron and protector of the Russian Emperor Alexander II and the Russian victorious army.
The cathedral designed in a neo-Byzantine style was built in memory of those who died for the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman yoke during the Russo-Turkish War of Liberation (1877-1878).

Construction of the church began on August 9, 1904 and lasted until 1912. It was consecrated in 1924. On January 1, 1951, the church was declared a patriarchal cathedral, and in 1955 - a cultural monument.
