On this day 30 years ago, by a decision of the 7th Grand National Assembly, the People’s Republic of Bulgaria was renamed Republic of Bulgaria.

Bulgaria was declared a people’s republic after a referendum in 1946, a time when the country was under the occupation of Soviet troops, at which 92.72% of the votes were for abolishing monarchy. Almost throughout its entire existence the People’s Republic of Bulgaria was ruled by the Bulgarian Communist Party, nominally together with the Bulgarian Agrarian National Union.

This historical period is the time of the totalitarian regime in the country, sustained by the repressive apparatus of State Security.
