On November 10, 1989, at a meeting of the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party, Communist leader Todor Zhivkov was ousted from the position of party secretary general. The request for his resignation was organized by Politburo member Petar Mladenov and candidate-member Andrei Lukanov.

Zhivkov came to power after more than 30 years of ruling socialist Bulgaria. This act marked the beginning of political changes in this country and the transition to democracy and market economy.
