Most of his paintings portray historical events, mostly significant moments in Bulgarian history. Vasil Goranov is one of the most recognizable Bulgarian artists on historical themes. The future master of the brush won his first competition only at the age of 4, as his first professional meeting with the world of fine arts took place at the University of Veliko Tarnovo, where he graduated in Painting.
He is said to have the unique gift of feeling the story. He manages to recreate key events and personalities from history. Vasil Goranov's paintings are created with oil technique and are owned by a number of Bulgarian and foreign collectors. His works adorn the pages of textbooks on Bulgarian history, as well as books on historical topics.
Many of his works illustrate events from the Middle Ages, others recreate the glorious years of Bulgaria’s wars for national unification (1912-1918).
Vasil Goranov claims that in his work he resorts to the purely classical approach, because it is more understandable and accessible to people. He admits that he paints "by his own conviction" because Bulgarians need to rediscover their history. And he hopes that his paintings contribute to raising the national self-confidence of Bulgarians, because we have many reasons to feel proud!
