Citizens and representatives of For the Earth and Greenpeace environmental organizations sent a petition with more than 19,000 signatures to the Ministry of Environment and Water. The petition calls for limiting the use of plastic. It is against the use of disposable plastic containers. The petition also calls on the authorities to increase prices of plastic bags and ban the use of plastic bags by 2025.

Bulgaria ranks first in the EU in terms of use of plastic bags per capita. The petition also calls on the authorities to levy a tax on all single-use plastic products. It also urges the authorities to promote reusable materials. Bulgaria was given a deadline until July 2021 to meet the requirements of the EU directive to limit the use of 8 types of plastic items.
