The participants in the so-called 5th Grand People's Uprising have gathered downtown Sofia. The rally takes place on the hundredth day of protests in Bulgaria, calling for the resignations of Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and of chief prosecutor Ivan Geshev, as well as for changes to the constitution and the introduction of fully machine voting. Traffic on Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard in front of the presidency has been blocked.
Bulgarians from different parts of the country and from abroad are taking part in the protest. The crowd is chanting "Resign!"
Croatian MEP Ivan Sincic said in front of the crowd that corruption was a pan-European problem that every citizen must fight in their own country. "You are not alone, Europe will support you, because we are all one," Sincic was quoted as saying by Dnevnik.
MEP Paul Tang from the Netherlands also took the floor. "I sincerely admire you. Things cannot go on like this. It is all about freedom and democracy," Tang was quoted as saying by BNT.
Yesterday the initiators of the protests from the so-called "Poison Trio" announced that four foreign MEPs were expected to take part in the events.
Protests in the country started in the morning at 7.30 am in Ruse, where protesters gathered in front of the building of the Regional Environmental Inspectorate with posters demanding the resignation of the government and in particular of the Minister of Environment and Waters - Emil Dimitrov. This was reported by our correspondent in the Danubian city, Assya Pencheva. Air pollution from various industrial enterprises is a problem that has brought dissatisfied citizens of Ruse to the streets for years.
According to political psychologist Antoaneta Hristova, so far the "Grand People's Uprisings" have not become significant events. "Uprising sounds pompous, it provokes attention, but what we see is a performance. Let's ask ourselves about the levels of manipulation by the organizers. The protest does not give answers and most people are confused," Hristova said in an interview with BNR.
