“Absolutely nothing is being done for traffic safety in Sofia, and the loss of life in road accidents has gone up 100% in the past two years,” said Bogdan Milchev, director of the Road Safety Institute for the BNR.

In his words Sofia city Mayor Yordanka Fandakova has absolutely ignored the recommendations of the Consultative Road Safety Council and has not implemented a single one of the measures as promised.

“There are no toad surface markings anywhere, nothing is being done about failure to yield right of way – the most frequent cause of traffic accidents, projects and road repairs are not audited for road safety, no department has been set up to inspect the entire road network of the city and to point to the most dangerous places,” Bogdan Milchev said.

More than 400 irregularities have been reported to the city council since the beginning of the year, he added.
