Bulgarians to be able to choose machine voting or paper ballot at next elections

In the next elections, voting in Bulgaria will be mixed - either with paper ballots or with voting machines - in polling stations with more than 300 voters. The new rules will apply also for presidential elections, as well as for elections for members of the European Parliament.
Regarding local elections, voting will still be possible only via paper ballots, BNR reports. This was decided by the Bulgarian parliament today, discussing amendments to the Electoral Code.
After contentious debates, the proposal of the VMRO party to drop the numbers on the ballot paper in front of the names of the political forces was rejected. The BSP suspected in this proposal the idea of introducing a hidden educational qualification, which would limit the voting rights of citizens, BNR reports.
The majority rejected the MRF's proposals to drop the principle of permanent residency for voting and election campaigning in a language other than Bulgarian, provided that a translation into Bulgarian was provided.
Work on amendments to the Electoral Code will continue tomorrow.
