A special chapter in GERB’s draft on new Constitution is dedicated to Bulgaria’s Ombudsman. However, according to the new draft, this institution is devoid of substance. In an interview for BNR, this country’s Ombudsman Diana Kovacheva commented that the new draft deprives citizens of protection. According to the new texts, the ombudsman has no right to intervene when employers, private bailiffs, quick loans companies or collection companies violate fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens, Ombudsman Kovacheva specified. Currently, the institution of Ombudsman in Bulgaria enjoys the highest possible status A as national institution for the protection of human rights, Diana Kovacheva pointed out. Bulgaria’s Ombudsman also noted that according to the new draft, an individual constitutional complaint is introduced, but citizens are not mentioned as an entity that can approach the Constitutional Court.
