19th night of anti-government protests, disciplinary sanctions imposed on police officers

For the 19th day running, last night protesters gathered in the centre of Sofia demanding the resignation of the government, of Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev, and of the director general of public service TV BNT Emil Koshlukov.

Once again the protesters blocked off major thoroughfares in the city, and marched to the European Commission representation in Bulgaria, where they demanded that Europe take notice of the protests going on in Bulgaria.

The protesters described the new social measures of the government for combatting Covid-19 as an attempt to pull the wool over the public’s eyes. Demonstrations took place in many other towns nationwide.

Meanwhile the results were made public of a probe into videos posted on social media showing the use of physical force by police against demonstrators at the protest in Sofia on 10 July, BNT reports. The probe ascertained there was excessive use of force by four police officers and violation of the fundamental rights of citizens. Disciplinary sanctions will be imposed on the police officers in compliance with the Ministry of Interior Act.
