The European Commission has approved 77 million EUR from the European Regional Development Fund to improve Sofia's integrated waste management system. The money is earmarked for the construction of a highly efficient plant for the simultaneous production of heat and electricity with fuel obtained from non-recyclable household waste. The process, called cogeneration, will provide the citizens of Sofia with affordable energy and will be environment-friendly.
