Bulgaria now importing significantly more electricity than exporting

Photo: BGNES

Electricity production in Bulgaria has decreases by over 15%, as the decrease in hydroelectric power plants is about 50%. Many manufacturers are planning repairs, which will strengthen Bulgaria's new profile as a net electricity importer. From the beginning of the year to February 2, this country imported 570 684 MWh, which is 108.21% more than in the same period last year. On the other hand, electricity exports fell by about 33.67% compared to January 2019 to 507 749 mWh. This shows that because of high market prices it is cheaper for Bulgarian companies to buy electricity from abroad. For example, the price of electricity on the day-ahead market of the Bulgarian Independent Energy Exchange on February 4 is 43.25 EUR/mWh, while in Germany and France it is sold for about 28 EUR/mWh, capital.bg points out.
