Next year we will be able to tell the Bulgarian citizens: we have already reached gas independence and can import gas from various suppliers. Practically, this is real diversification, Bulgaria’s Premier Boyko Borissov announced during the inspection of the construction of the gas interconnector with Greece. This country’s Minister of Energy Temenuzhka Petkova, the Chairman of the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission Ivan Ivanov, the Ambassador of the USA to Sofia Herro Mustafa, the Ambassador of Greece to Bulgaria Dimitris Chronopoulos and the Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Sofia Nargiz Gurbanova also attended the inspection of the IGB project. The total length of the gas pipeline will be 182 kilometers and the interconnector will have the capacity to transfer up to 3 billion cubic meters of gas per year. Later, its capacity can be extended to 5 billion cubic meters per year. Thanks to this project, Bulgaria and its neighbors will have access to alternative gas supplies from the Caspian region, as well as from existing and future LNG terminals.
