First lung transplant was carried out in Bulgaria

A team of the University Hospital Lozenets in Sofia headed by Dr, Igor Tudorache from the University Hospital in Hannover made the first lung transplantation in Bulgaria. A seventy-year-old man with extreme degree of pulmonary insufficiency is the recipient. Recently, Bulgaria’s Minister of Health assumed that such medical surgery can be possible within 12 to 18 months in Bulgaria. There are 7 hospitals in this country with license to make transplants. So far, a total of 485 kidney transplants, 149 liver and 58 heart transplants were done in this country.
