Competition for regional mayors in the three biggest Bulgarian cities is also big. People in these cities vote for mayor of municipality, municipal councilors and regional mayor. A total of 341 candidates are competing to head the 24 regions in Sofia Municipality. In Plovdiv 29 political parties and coalitions registered for the local elections and 16 of them nominated candidates for regional mayors. 45 candidates are competing to head the five regions in Varna. A candidate for mayor is elected on the first round if he/she earns more than 50% of all votes. Otherwise, run-off elections are held.
