Bulgaria’s Vice President Iliana Yotova opened in Sofia a conference themed Does EU Have the Potential to be Independent Global Player, organized by the Economics and International Relations Institute and Friedrich Ebert Foundation. In her speech Vice-President Yotova pointed out that the EU member states have many reservations about common foreign policy decisions which are regarded as compromise rather than consensus and asked whether the moment to rethink the EU treaties, in order to achieve a real common foreign policy, has come. The EU countries have not achieved common position on the future enlargement of the union. What signals the European Commission is sending, giving the EU enlargement portfolio to Hungary, which often isolates itself from the common European policies, Vice-President Yotova asked. Iliana Yotova described the internal divisions as potential threat to the EU, in view of the risks to its future development as a united community. Europe needs to overcome the differences between the North and the South, between the East and the West. Europe will remain too small if it is divided, Vice-President Yotova contends.
