EP Election 2019: Pre-election campaign in Bulgaria is among EU’s more active ones

An interim report by the Bulgarian team of the European Union Election Observation Mission has reported that the campaign in Bulgaria is relatively active against the backdrop of current low intensity of the national campaigns for the election of MEPs in the EU. While in most EU Member States, economic issues, migration and the environment are at the forefront, issues related to people's well-being are leading in Bulgaria, while economic issues remain secondary.

Bulgaria is also among the EU countries where national problems prevail over European ones during the campaign. The nationalist formation VMRO has filed in Parliament a proposal for amendments to the Criminal Code, providing for imprisonment of up to 4 years and heavy fines for politicians who slander or insult their opponents. The formation argues that its legislative initiative is motivated by the spirit in which the current election campaign, filled with lies about opponents, turns politics into dirty and muddy terrain.

The Ataka Party presented three scholarships to students and they promised, after completing their training, to remain in Bulgaria. According to Ataka, low incomes and depopulation of some areas are among the main problems of Bulgaria and this is because young people leave the country and go to work in western countries.

The MRF team has continued to argue that GERB applies double standards, as in Europe it opposes neo-fascism, hatred and xenophobia, while in Bulgaria it ran alongside nationalists.

GERB and the UDF continued to voice their intention of being a guarantor of Bulgaria's European development and continuing building the positive image the country enjoys during GERB’s government.

The latest BSP campaign events pointed out the vow that if the party won the elections, it would first take measures to restore the economy, remove political and bureaucratic racketeering, and break channels for plundering national resources.
