Bulgaria’s Ministry of Justice has proposed amendments to the Bulgarian Citizenship Act. According to the Justice Ministry, the possibility of acquiring Bulgarian citizenship through the so-called investments should be abolished. The amendments to Bulgarian Citizenship Act also envisage that the requirements to the candidates for Bulgarian citizenship should be specified. Moreover, applicants for Bulgarian passports must know Bulgarian and provide evidence of employment and incomes in this country.  The proposal of the Bulgarian Justice Ministry envisages measures aimed at boosting control against embezzlements during the procedure for granting Bulgarian citizenship. In the past six years a total of 50 foreigners who declared that they would make investments in this country received Bulgarian passports. Forty six of them declared that they would make investments to the tune of EUR 500,000 and four of them claimed that their investments in Bulgaria would amount to EUR 1 million.
