One in three pensioners in Bulgaria is at risk of poverty, data of Eurostat about 2017 show. Bulgaria places 4th in the EU under this indicator. A total of 32.4% of the Bulgarian pensioners, including the people who retired due to an illness, are at risk of poverty. Their number is highest in the past 8 years, the survey also reads. Estonia (46.1% risk of poverty rate), Latvia (43.7% risk of poverty rate) and Lithuania (36.7% risk of poverty rate) are top the poverty risk ranking. The French pensioners are at lowest risk of poverty (7% risk of poverty rate). In 2017 the proportion of pensioners at risk of poverty in the European Union was estimated at 14.2%. The rate has been rising gradually since 2013 when it was 12.6%.
