On Friday night, Deputy Prime Minister Valeriy Simeonov, in charge of economic and demographic policy, resigned and the resignation was immediately accepted by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov.
This happened after 26 day of protests by mothers of children with disabilities, whom the minister called "screaming women with pseudo ill children". Announcing his decision to withdraw, Simeonov said he had not been under pressure of the prime minister, but the decision was personal, in order to protect the government from media campaigns against it, which was an obstacle to normal operation of the government. Protesters welcomed the resignation, but would continue protests until the parliament's vote over the resignation. The tent camp, erected in front of the National Assembly, will remain there until demands for reforms in legislation concerning people with disabilities were met.
Political observers comment that a new outbreak of tensions has emerged within the ruling coalition over the question of who is going to assume the functions of the resigning deputy prime minister in the government.
