Do you remember what your favorite subject at school was? For the author of this article it was literature and history to some degree, but unfortunately we often learn by obligation. History requires us to remember a whole lot of facts and dates and for those who try to help their children by drawing tables or simplifying the textbook information, we have good news, at least as far as the history of Bulgaria is concerned. Students, and their parents, can now learn the most important facts about the Middle Ages, the Ottoman yoke, and the modern times, while playing the "King of History" table game. How was the idea born and what are its rules? More from its author Kalin Radulov, who is lecturer in entrepreneurship:
“The idea for creating the game emerged during classes. The foundation of a good business idea is finding out a problem or issue a product can solve. In this case, it was the fact students do not remember dates and years well as they see the task as boring. We started thinking and offering different ideas, one of which was to make a table game. I am a great fan of such games and I own a club for similar activities. That's why I could help in choosing the right mechanics for the game and understand what people want or do not want in it. The rules are as follows: each player has cards - events in front of them. The number of cards depends on the number of players, so that the game is not too long. Most often they are 5 or 6. There is always an initial event that marks the start of the game and the task of each player is to put each of his events in the right place on the time line as knowing the exact date is not necessary.”
The cards available to the players contain information about the year and event that happened back then. That's what makes the game a useful helper in remembering historical events.
At a certain point, the game becomes more complex, as many cards accumulate on the table and many wrong moves on the part of the players are possible. If, however, the answer related to an event was correct, the player has the right to use a special card that can change the game in various ways. One of them can win a bonus move, which gives them advantage over other players. The winner is the one who first freed themselves from all cards. If the game ended in a draw, a duel is declared. It is a choice of a random historical event and a randomly chosen year. The winner becomes the one who tells faster if the event happened before or after a date.
The "King of History" is one of the board games that can safely be called educational because in addition to being created to help the learning process, its authors are actually students from the Elin Pelin School in Sofia. Its success is guaranteed, as interest has been great and the rumor about the game spread 15 days before being presented to a wider audience. The official presentation will be held on October 19 in a club in Sofia. Kalin says that they cannot look for a market for the game abroad, as it is only in Bulgarian and is dedicated to Bulgarian history. On behalf of the team that created the game, he also thanked the publishers from the Bulgarian History website as without their help the King of History would not have been a reality.
