The EC has formally rejected the position of the Bulgarian government that Art. 417 of the Code of Civil Procedure, according to which banks in Bulgaria sue their debtors in a fast-track procedure without the possibility for appeal, was in line with EU law.

The EC is currently considering measures that are to be taken against this country. This was announced by Dessislava Filipova, lawyer at the Bulgarian Center for European Integration and Human Rights. She added that one of the main schemes that banks used in breach of EU law in order to put debtors on their knees was the unilateral rise of interest rate.
