The European Commission has recommended opening of accession talks with the Republic of Macedonia and Albania. This was announced by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini at a joint press conference held with Johannes Hahn, Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations.

The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry expressed its satisfaction with the recommendations of the EC. Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, the government and the diplomatic services of the Republic of Bulgaria have been working on this task in recent months, the Bulgarian MFA said.

EU leaders are yet to discuss ways of helping the Western Balkan countries accelerate reforms and strengthen their ties with the Union through additional initiatives.
