Prosecutor's Office investigating nine hospitals over dereliction of duty

Prosecutor-General spokesperson Rumyana Arnaudova has announced that the Prosecutor's Office is launching an investigation over dereliction of duty in the Pirogov emergency hospital and six other hospitals across Bulgaria.

The spokesperson recalled that two other hospitals have been under investigation, too. Cases concern the so-called “hospital in hospital” model, in which state-owned or municipal medical establishments allow private hospitals to operate in their buildings, as the practice has been banned since 2010.

At the end of last year, the Chief Prosecutor, the Minister of Interior and the Minister of Healthcare announced that hundreds of agreements signed in hospitals across Bulgaria will be checked. As part of this investigation, the head of the Healthcare Fund in Lovech, Northern Bulgaria, was arrested yesterday.
