Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov stated that with a view to preserving the EU cohesion policy and the common agricultural policy, the national contributions to the Union budget may have to be increased and that Bulgaria was ready to support such a decision.

At this time the EU countries are divided on the matter. At the beginning of February information emerged that Bulgaria and seven other East European countries have agreed to raise their contributions to the multiannual budget up to 1.1 percent, after Great Britain leaves the EU. Later the Bulgarian Ministry of Finance denied the information, but at the end of February PM Boyko Borissov stated that it would be more advantageous for Bulgaria to increase its contribution to the EU budget.
