Bulgarian Ombudsman calls for establishing single European food control authority body

A single European food control authority body should exist, says Bulgarian Ombudsman Maya Manolova. Manolova. She has taken part in a conference of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU on the topic of: "Healthy Future for Europe: Healthy Nutrition for Children."

The Ombudsman also called for greater funding for studies that could show the impact of food additives on the human body and specified that research should be done at European-wide level. A free app was also presented. It is the work of Alexander Chaushev and Venelin Chakalov, 12th grade students from the town of Smolyan and it helps showing the contents of food. The application can scan the label of a food and display its exact contents.

In the framework of the conference, Director of the European Commission Public Health Directorate John Ryan announced that Brussels would restrict advertising of harmful and dangerous foods in the media. This provides for a new European directive, which is in its final stage and needs to be completed by the end of the Bulgarian Presidency.
