On February 2 we mark World Wetlands Day

Photo: library

Since 1971, when the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance was signed, Bulgaria has been one of the countries which mark the World Wetlands Day on February 2. In the 20th century some of these vulnerable eco systems dried or changed significantly. According to rough estimates, the wetlands now cover only 0.8% of the Bulgarian territory. Currently, the most-important wetlands are protected by law. The practical activity of the state in this direction has been subject to regulation by the National Action Plan for Conservation of Wetlands of High Significance in Bulgaria 2013-2022.
