At a meeting in Sofia with world famous Israeli author, historian and politician Prof. Michael Bar-Zohar, President Rumen Radev expressed gratitude for his contribution to the popularization of the history of the rescue of the Jewish community in Bulgaria during World War 2.
The Bulgarian head of state stressed that the rescue was the work of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and of MPs, but most of all of the people of Bulgaria. Professor Michael Bar-Zohar on his part stressed that “Bulgarian Jews are indebted to Bulgaria for the popularization of the fact that a small country refused to comply with the demand of the Nazi regime for deportation, an example of the Bulgarian spirit.” In his words Bulgaria is a unique example of tolerance and integration of the Jewish community.
