Christmas tree in Sofia glitters with decoration made by children

A few days ago, the Christmas tree in front of the Regional Administration in Sofia was lit up. Apart from being situated on a central pedestrian boulevard, the tree is special, because its decoration is the work of those who most sincerely feel the magic of Christmas - children. With great enthusiasm, the children placed colorful decoration and naturally the most exciting moment for them was lighting up the tree. The initiative comes from “Diva Zemya” women’s NGO, which for years has been actively assisting children in unequal position, encouraging rising talents, supporting elderly people and seeking for adherents in their noble initiatives. Founder and chair of "Diva Zemya" is Vanya Lambeva, mayor of the village of Tuden, Godech municipality:

“We had previously given various materials to children in order for them to make toys and decoration. The whole idea has turned into a magnificent celebration. The decoration was made by the kids from all kindergartens in Botevgrad, as well as ten children from the Sinchets kindergarten in Sofia. At the end of the summer we signed an agreement with the District Administration in the capital city and since then we have had a lot of joint initiatives. We organized an exhibition of children's drawings in the building of the Sofia District, in which children with disabilities took part. Diva Zemya Association has also created childcare centers in different cities across the country. We first registered as a ladies club and so we try to focus on everything that affects women, mothers and children.”

СнимкаChildren's eyes should shine with happiness not only during the Christmas holidays. Children need support and chance to show their potential throughout the year, and that is what our team has been doing. According to Vanya Lambeva, Bulgarian society is not doing enough for the full integration of children in unequal position. Charity campaigns are often concentrated around holidays when it is usually easier for people to open their hearts and help others. But adolescents with special needs need year-round initiatives to support their development.

"These are people who are adequate, capable, and they just need to be given a chance to act. That is what we have been trying to do - through sports events, art, music. Whether they are talented children or children with disabilities, we give them a chance to participate in various activities and hobbies; to be active and motivated."
