The Director of the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases Prof. Todor Kantardzhiev announced that Bulgaria sees excessive use of antibiotics. He warned that heavy use of such drugs makes dangerous microbes in the human system resistant to treatment.

By 35% more and cheaper antibiotics have been prescribed by Bulgarian hospitals, 2017 statistics released by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control suggest. There are 25,000 fatalities caused by anti-microbe resistance in the European Union, with 700,000 cases across the world.

Until 2050 mortality caused by such resistance is expected to be more frequent than even cancer mortality, the World Health Organization has warned.
