The Greens: Subterranean waters in Dobruja are under serious risk of pollution, if gas extraction is permitted

The subterranean waters in Dobruja region (Bulgaria’s granary) are under a serious risk of pollution, if the investment proposal of Rusgeocom BG Company related to extraction of gas in this region is fulfilled, the Political Party of The Greens warns. The Greens already came up with negative expert opinion on this issue. Currently, public discussions are being held under the project. According to Rusgeocom BG, the prospecting that will take place between 2018 and 2039 will be made 2700 meters below surface and the shallow aquifer will not be affected. According to The Greens, the underground coal gasification is a non-conventional method of gas extraction, which falls under the scope of the moratorium on shale gas extraction. The project will also result in re-cultivation of huge plots of land in the region.
