Bulgarian Parliament adopts amendments related to names of Bulgarian children born abroad

The Bulgarian National Assembly has unanimously adopted amendments to the Civil Registry Act, related to the entry of a father's name in the birth certificates of children, who are Bulgarian citizens and were born abroad.

After 2010 a practice of not writing the father's name down Bulgarian birth certificates became common, as the name of the child's father was not written in foreign birth certificates. Actually, including the father’s name in the ID is not a common practice in a number of European countries, unlike Bulgaria. As a result of this, Bulgarian children born abroad used to be enlisted with only two names in the population register, just like local citizens of the foreign country they were born in.

The amendments now enable the parents of Bulgarian children born outside their country to have their father’s name written down in their birth certificates, despite the fact this might not be a practice in the foreign country.
