Bulgarian bee-keepers are to launch protests on Tuesday (October 31). They will protest over unpaid subsidies. The bee-keepers are not satisfied with the fact that the transition period from conventional to organic beekeeping was reduced from five years to one year. The bee-keepers insist on a direct subsidy of EUR 10 per beehive and demand stricter control of the chemical treatment of plant diseases in agriculture, which in their view causes the death of thousands of beehives in Bulgaria every year. The apiarists also insist that foods resembling pure honey should bear the label “imitation”.
