Renowned Bulgarian conductor Mihail Angelov has passed away at the age of 85. He is among the founders of the Sofia Soloists chamber ensemble and has been director and chief conductor of the opera houses in Rousse, Plovdiv, Bourgas and Blagoevgrad.
In the period from 1961 to 1991, Mihail Angelov has successively been conductor, deputy chief conductor, chief conductor and director of the Sofia Opera. After 2005 he was chief conductor of the Stefan Makedonski national music theatre.
Maestro Angelov has tutored foremost singers such as Ghena Dimitrova, Nelly Bozhkova, Valerie Popova, Alexandrina Pendatchanska, Stoyan Popov, Ivan Konsulov, Boyko Tsvetanov and Tsvetan Mihaylov. His son, Lyudmil Angelov is a world famous pianist, piano pedagogue and organizer of prestigious music events.
Maestro Angelov’s repertoire features 39 works, 17 of which he presented in Bulgaria for the first time. During his long career, spanning 55 years, Maestro Angelov has had more than 2,500 performances, including ballets, choir and symphony concerts, oratorical works.
He is holder of the Cyril and Methodius order 1st class and of all high distinctions in the sphere of culture in Bulgaria.
